The two short bands split by destination, not just distance. Shanghai is only 780 miles away but sits in short type 1, and Tokyo sits in short type 2.

What changed

  • May 2026: Short type 1 Premium Economy fell from 20,000 to 18,000 and Business from 28,000 to 27,000. Short type 2 Business rose from 32,000 to 33,000. Medium Premium Economy rose from 38,000 to 39,000 and Business from 58,000 to 60,000. Long Premium Economy rose from 50,000 to 52,000 and Business from 88,000 to 91,000. Ultra-long Premium Economy rose from 75,000 to 78,000 and Business from 115,000 to 119,000.
  • April 2025: Travel blogs reported that Cathay raised many prices, mostly by up to about 5%, while lowering some short-haul Economy awards (for example Taipei) and raising others (Tokyo and Bali Economy, 12,500 to 13,000).
  • January 2023: Travellers reported that free changes and free stopovers on awards ended.

Two booking tips to check before you rely on them

  • Travellers report that a mixed-cabin award is priced pro-rata, not at the highest cabin for the whole trip.
  • Travellers report that a layover of up to about 24 hours is allowed as a transfer, where longer stopovers are not.
